Is Botox® Cosmetic painful?
Botox® Cosmetic injection treatments are very simple to perform and usually take less than ten minutes per facial area. Using a tiny micro-needle, a very small amount of Botox® Cosmetic is injected, very precisely, into several locations on your face. Since the needle used is so small, no sedation or local anesthetic is necessary. Pain associated with the treatment is minimal and comfort is enhanced by applying a topical anesthetic cream or an ice pack a few minutes before the Botox® Cosmetic Injection.
Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately after your Botox® Cosmetic treatment as long as an upright position is maintained. It is important to not rub, massage or apply pressure to the area treated for 4 to 6 hours. This helps to prevent Botox® Cosmetic from migrating away from the intended area into unwanted areas such as the eyelid. It also recommended that you do not do a strenuous workout within a few hours after injection.
Can you get botulism poisoning from Botox® Cosmetic?
No. In order to get botulism, you must be infected with the bacterium that produces the toxin. Botox® Cosmetic is composed of purified toxin and does not contain the bacteria. Boxtox® Cosmetic is made by Allergan, the only pharmaceutical company which makes Botox® Cosmetic in the United States, and Botox® Cosmetic has not caused any cases of botulism.
Are there any side effects?
As with any injection, it is possible to get a small bruise from the needle. When treating the forehead or brow area, if Botox® Cosmetic "migrates" down into the eyelid muscle, it could cause temporary drooping of the eyelid. (To minimize risk you are cautioned to remain upright and to not rub or apply pressure to the area injected for 4-6 hours.) In the rare instances of occurrence, treatment involves placing drops in the eye allowing elevation of the lid until the Botox® Cosmetic wears off. Should this occur, only a tiny amount of the toxin actually reaches the eyelid muscle, therefore the drooping lid usually resolves in just a few weeks rather than the 3-4 months that it lasts in the brow muscle.
FYI - A word about watered-down Botox® Cosmetic
Botox® Cosmetic is shipped at low temperatures in powdered form. All Botox Cosmetic must have sterile saline solution added before injection because you can't inject the powdered form. The volume of the solution used can be varied. What is important is the units of Botox® Cosmetic used to treat an area. There could be 10 units of Botox® Cosmetic in 1/10th cc, or only one unit per 1/10th cc of fluid. It is the amount of Botox® Cosmetic units used that will effect your results.
